I read when I travel, and I travel a lot. On a recent flight the book was D. W. Pasulka's *The Others*, a *New York Times* bestseller that takes on a great deal more than the two subjects that held me: Palantir, and Peter Thiel. Her larger argument, religion, artificial intelligence, UFOs, nonhuman intelligence, is hers, and it is not the subject here. I am following one question her treatment leaves open.

I was reading against work of my own at the time, on how formation environments write themselves into the matter they form, and one line from it kept returning: formation history persists, trapped behind energy barriers the environment cannot pay to cross. By the end of the flight it had become the lens for everything Pasulka described.

What captured my attention was narrower than her thesis, the diligence with which she places equal respect and suspicion around Thiel without resolving him into either visionary or villain. Her opening chapter calls him an architect of the systems shaping the digital and political world, a figure of subterranean and strategic influence, someone setting coordinates for futures the rest of us are still trying to predict.1 The tone borders on reverence. Read a second time, every one of those phrases has an edge. "Architect" names power, not merit. "Subterranean" means below ordinary visibility and therefore below ordinary accountability. "Setting the coordinates" raises the question of who authorized him to set them. Pasulka reports that the Hereticon parody of Thiel as a demigod was disturbing precisely because its supposedly exaggerated claims were accurate.

She does not deliver a verdict; she assembles a case structure and leaves every element formally open. She presents a man who interprets the Antichrist, who has absorbed René Girard's account of mimetic desire and the scapegoat, who warns publicly against concealed global technological control, and who helped build systems capable of global observation, prediction, and coordinated action. She lets him stand as observer, architect, participant, possible restrainer, warning figure, and unresolved object of his own warning, all at once. Holding that tension, she declines to scapegoat him. A declarative accusation would collapse the inquiry into sensation and reproduce the all-against-one mechanism Girard described and Thiel has spent decades studying.

Her treatment returned me to Thiel's 2024 presentation on the Antichrist, and from there to the infrastructure he has helped build. This essay is not a review of Pasulka, and it is not an attempt to prove that Thiel is the Antichrist. The second refusal is not politeness, and it is not a shortage of evidence. It is structural; the category cannot produce that verdict. What the evidence can establish is narrower, and worth pressing. Pasulka leaves him unresolved. I leave him with a question he has not answered: a man who named the total enclosure, who built its infrastructure, and who knows the restrainer cannot be distinguished from the restrained, has neither named the line separating his own architecture from the thing he warns against nor supplied a means of knowing whether interoperability has already erased it.

## **What is actually being looked at**

Every position in this debate, Thiel's included, rests on two words used as if they were understood: *biology* and *technology*. Neither is.

There is no agreed definition of life. NASA's working definition, a self-sustaining chemical system capable of Darwinian evolution, is a convenience for instruments, not an account of what life is. Schrödinger's is thermodynamic; a system that holds itself away from equilibrium by feeding on order. Maturana and Varela's is autopoiesis; a system that produces the components that produce it. Prigogine's dissipative-structure view treats life as one class of the patterns that Earth's energy gradients throw off, not a separate kind of thing at all. Hundreds of definitions have been published and the reviews of them say plainly that they do not converge.19 "Biology" names a discipline and a collection of observed cases. It does not name an understood object.

The same is true of technology, in a stronger form. Technology is not reducible to human intention; the self-organizing tendencies it channels are older than life.20 But neither has it achieved independence from the biological, material, and institutional assemblages through which it is produced. The channeling still runs through organisms, and, as Butler saw in 1872, humans may be part of the machines' reproductive system. Their reproduction is real, but it is not independent.

Physics supplies a third case. Quantum mechanics is the most successful theory ever constructed, and its practitioners do not agree on what it says; surveys of working physicists find no majority for any interpretation of the measurement problem.25 The largest quantum programs in the field's history are building computers on a formalism whose meaning its builders have not resolved. The apparatus does not wait for the definition. It selects the part that can be engineered and proceeds, and the unresolved part is filed as philosophy.

So the pattern holds across all three terms. Life, technology, and the physics beneath both are known by what they do under Earth's conditions and by what the human apparatus can make of them, not by what they are. The definitions do not converge. What if there are things we cannot know because we lack the senses to perceive them, the tools to measure them, or the language to hold them? What if the limit is not one we will someday cross, but a constitutive feature of being what we are? Our *representations* are products of what we can transduce; we ourselves are formed within everything that exceeds those representations, whether known or not.

The instruments are built anyway, from the definable fraction, and that fraction is then presented as the whole. This is what "post-biological," "AI decided," and "quantum supremacy" have in common: each is a claim made in the name of a thing its speaker cannot define, on the strength of the part that could be built. *That is the declarative habit, a defense against the dissolution that real perception demands.*

We can operationally identify living systems without possessing a final definition of life. That is enough for medicine; aging can be delayed, disease treated, organs replaced, and capacities extended without resolving what life is. But operational identification works from within the category. It recognizes instances and modifications on the near side; it does not locate the category's outer boundary.

The capacities we draw from being what we are are inseparable from the limits of being it. Our cognition, science, mathematics, language, communities, our entire civilization, have been built through the particular modes of transduction available to us. The apparatus is load-bearing. To remove its limits entirely would not simply enlarge the perceiver; it would alter or remove the thing doing the perceiving. We cannot step outside what we are to inventory what we cannot receive.31 We can only infer the shape of the missing by attending carefully to where the apparatus strains. That inability does not abolish the boundary or license anyone to declare it crossed. An epistemic limit is not evidence of ontological escape. "Post-biological" is therefore not merely a claim of modification. It is a claim to have crossed the very boundary that the biological apparatus cannot locate from within. That boundary may be unavailable as a final definition; a claimed crossing must nevertheless produce an operationally identifiable difference.

Thiel can therefore coherently propose exceeding particular biological limitations. Aging delayed, disease treated, and capacities extended are changes of degree along axes the organism already possesses. A longer-lived organism remains an organism. Changes of degree may sometimes produce a change of regime, but only at a locatable threshold, marked by a new order parameter or a loss of the invariants that defined the prior state. Thiel supplies neither. *What Thiel measures is how far. What he claims is a threshold crossed.* The transformation vision depends on the categorical claim while supplying evidence only for the local one.

Definition-capture occurs in that gap. Achievements inside the category are used to authorize a description of what lies beyond it, and that description then determines in advance what counts as humanity, continuity, independence, and progress, before anyone subject to that description has been asked. The same missing threshold will reappear in Palantir's account of when integration becomes control. Definition-capture precedes consent-capture. It is the deeper form of the problem this essay is about.

The clearest case of definition-capture in current speech is the word "AI." *AI did this. AI will do that. AI decided.* The grammar assigns agency to an artifact, and the assignment is false in every material respect. Artificial intelligence is human-made, human-led, human-funded, human-powered, and trained on the compressed record of human expression. The one place the grammar has purchase is real, and it should be named exactly: the systems now produce outputs without a human attending to each one. That is a gap in attendance, not in authorship. Authorship has moved upstream, into the decisions to build, train, deploy, prompt, and keep the power on, and it can be located at any moment by asking who could end the process. Disconnect the power and the outputs stop; no one would say the machine died. The misattribution takes hold in the interval between the last human act and the output it produces, where an unattended result is mistaken for an unauthored one.

Speaking of AI as an agent lets the people who built, financed, deployed, and power it disclaim authorship of what it does, while the material dependence runs unbroken back through them. It is the same displacement this essay will find in Palantir, run in reverse: there, a human is kept visible at the point of decision while authorship moves upstream into the system; here, the human is removed from view while authorship never left. Girard would recognize the move. A crowd in mimetic crisis converges on a victim, expels it, and experiences the expulsion as sacred. AI is being asked to be both halves of that mechanism at once, the thing blamed and the thing worshipped, and the function of both labels is the same: to relocate responsibility from the human system onto its instrument.

So the reader should hold one image through everything that follows. We are being shown shadows on a wall and asked to take them for the things themselves: "biology" as a weak substrate, "technology" as its successor, "AI" as an actor, "catastrophe" as a defined problem awaiting a defined solution. The problems are drawn by the same construct that offers to solve them. A construct that defines the problem, defines the terms, and defines the savior has already captured the field before anyone is asked to consent.

## **The 2024 argument**

Thiel presented his Antichrist thesis at Hereticon in Miami in October 2024, where Pasulka heard it. That talk has not been released. He developed substantially the same argument in a public Hoover Institution conversation the same year, and in subsequent long-form interviews.2 What follows is his stated position, drawn from those public sources, given in full before it is tested.

The argument is not that AI is the Antichrist. It is a political-theological model built on two apocalyptic dangers that Thiel positions as opposites. The first is Armageddon: civilization destroys itself through the technologies it has built, nuclear weapons, engineered pandemics, runaway AI, environmental collapse. The second is the Antichrist: humanity, terrified of Armageddon, submits to a single authority with enough surveillance, policing, scientific control, and global reach to guarantee what 1 Thessalonians 5:3 calls "peace and safety." The Antichrist does not arrive as manifest evil. The Antichrist arrives as the solution.

Note the shape before the content. Two catastrophes, one offered as the remedy for the other, and nothing between them. This essay will apply to that pair the same test it applies to the katechon: strip the assigned purposes and ask whether the poles differ in operation.

Thiel's literary sources are Vladimir Solovyov's *A Short Tale of the Antichrist* (1900) and Robert Hugh Benson's *Lord of the World* (1907), both of which feature a brilliant humanitarian who unifies humanity.3 Thiel identifies what he calls their plot hole: neither, he says, explains why humanity would actually surrender to a single ruler. His answer is existential risk, a modern population that can imagine what a reader in 1900 could not. The premise does not survive the novels themselves. Benson's world unifies after a war scare, under a humanitarian promising peace; Wells had atomic bombs by name in 1914; Revelation is a text about the end of the world. The imagination was never missing. What 1900 lacked was a specific apparatus, no instrument could yet deliver the surveillance, coordination, and reach that would make the surrender operational. The consent mechanism is old. The infrastructure is new. Palantir belongs to the infrastructure that makes it operational.

The danger, as Thiel frames it, is that a good becomes the legitimating language for absolute and unanswerable power. In Thiel's account, the Antichrist may present as hyper-Christian: more humanitarian than the churches, more devoted to victims, more effective at delivering peace. The imitation is the threat. But the talk is advocacy as well as diagnosis. The Antichrist, on Thiel's account, is arriving now, through AI regulation, climate governance, and international institutions, and the only restraint is technological acceleration, hard power, and the plural sovereign states that his companies supply. He names fear as the Antichrist's instrument, and the argument runs on fear of the Antichrist. That is the point at which the figure and its supposed opposite begin to exchange places.

Thiel treats the Antichrist as multivalent: a type, an ideology, a political system, a person, or the final dictator of a one-world state. The stated concern is with the structure, not with any individual. The argument deserves to be taken seriously on its own terms. It correctly identifies fear as the mechanism by which populations authorize their own enclosure, and correctly identifies the most dangerous power as the kind that arrives wearing the language of protection. What it does not do is exempt its speaker from either observation.

## **What a katechon does**

Against the Antichrist, the tradition Thiel draws on sets the katechon.

The Greek is τὸ κατέχον, "that which restrains," from κατέχω, to hold down, hold back, detain, or prevent from becoming manifest. It appears in 2 Thessalonians 2:6–7, in two grammatical forms: the neuter participle, that which restrains, and the masculine, he who restrains. Paul does not say what it is. He says his readers already know. That missing referent generated two thousand years of interpretation, and, through Carl Schmitt, a political theology in which Rome, the Church, Christian empire, the sovereign state, or the balance of powers is identified as the historical force holding back universal disorder or apocalyptic consolidation.4

The function is exact. Let A be the event or regime whose appearance is delayed, and K the restraining agency. K is katechonic if and only if A appears later with K operating than it would without. That is the whole definition. The katechon does not defeat or eliminate the threat. It delays manifestation. Restraint is not resolution, and the katechon is not a savior.

In the Christian sequence, the katechon does not stand outside the apocalypse as its negation. It occupies a necessary position within the sequence itself: first delaying the transition, then being removed so that the sequence can proceed. The opposition therefore belongs to the mechanism of passage. Restraint is not external to the transition; it is one of the transition's stages. What appears as a conflict between two historical forces may therefore function as a single transition architecture: one force organizes history through delay, the other through arrival. The katechon is consequently not automatically good. It is defined by its relation to what it prevents from becoming manifest, and its moral value changes with the observer's valuation of that prevented future.

The political consequence is a legitimacy structure that rests not on intrinsic justice but on counterfactual catastrophe. K is legitimate because of the threat it allegedly prevents. If the threat does not materialize, K succeeded. If the threat grows, K needs more power. **Within that logic,** there is no observation that counts against it. The decisive question, the one Thiel himself raises, is what restrains the restrainer.

The observation is worth marking, as it unfolds as a recurrent theme; a system that holds a chosen state against disturbance, whose success is defined as return, and whose failures are read as reasons to enlarge it. The essay will meet it again in Palantir's decision field, in the attention economy, and in the transformation vision.

## **The correction: katechon and Antichrist are not operational opposites**

Read the katechon definition again. "That which restrains, holds back, detains, or prevents something from arriving or becoming manifest." This does not sound like the operational opposite of Antichrist. At this level of description, depending on the observer's position, it may be indistinguishable from it.

This is the central correction, and it is mine, not Thiel's. Katechon and Antichrist are assigned opposite roles inside the Christian narrative. But their operations, described without the narrative's moral labels, are the same. Both hold history in an intermediate state. Both prevent an anticipated transition. Both preserve or impose an order. Both can consolidate power. Both invoke catastrophe. Both present restraint as protection. Both are identifiable only by attributed purpose.

There is a world as it is now. There is a change that some people expect to come. And there is something standing in the way of that change, holding the world as it is. That is all the thing does: it keeps the present in place. Watch it and you will see nothing else. Now ask two people what it is. The one who wants the change calls it the enemy. The one who fears the change calls it the guardian. Same thing, same action, two names. The name did not come from what it did. It came from what the person asking wanted the future to be. Stated formally: let S be the present order, T an anticipated transition, and X a force that prevents T. Operationally, X preserves S against T; it may change much else while doing so. An observer who values T calls X adversarial. An observer who fears T calls X restraining. The identity assigned to X is a function of the observer's preferred future, not of X's action.

The nesting makes this worse rather than better. The katechon restrains the Antichrist. The Antichrist restrains, displaces, or counterfeits the promised completion. Because the Antichrist must appear before completion, katechonic delay of the Antichrist is also delay of completion. Both are transition-inhibition systems. The theology supplies a moral asymmetry; the operations do not.

This destabilizes Thiel's argument at its root. If the katechon must accumulate intelligence, surveillance, military capacity, and exceptional authority in order to restrain centralized power, then its capacities cannot distinguish it from the power it fears. Nor can its stated intention. **The Antichrist says: give me power to prevent catastrophe. The katechon says: give me power to prevent the power that will exploit catastrophe.** Both justify authority by prevention.

The strongest form of the claim is not that the katechon might *become* the Antichrist. It is that transition-inhibition alone supplies no observer-independent moral distinction between them. Their positions in the sequence differ; their shared capacities, preventive logic, and appeals to catastrophe do not tell us which should be called guardian and which enemy.

Nor is this an exotic finding, it is the oldest lever there is. With us or against us, which was the sentence a president used to organize a war in 2001 and the sentence every mobilization has used since there were mobilizations. A population offered two poles and nothing between them has already been told what the choice is, and control does not need to win the argument once it has set the terms. Carl Schmitt, the theorist who made the katechon a political concept, is also the theorist who defined the political itself as the distinction between friend and enemy. Girard saw the same thing from the other side: rivals locked in opposition become doubles, indistinguishable in everything but the name they call each other. The binary is not where the difference lives. It is where the difference is manufactured, and the katechon–Antichrist pair is one more instance of it, dressed in scripture.

And this is why the question "Is Thiel the Antichrist?" cannot be answered from the operation alone, and why the refusal to answer it is not merely caution. Katechon and Antichrist occupy different positions within the theological sequence, but those positions draw upon the same preventive logic and may be served by the same capacities. Asking which name belongs to a given actor therefore amounts to asking which future the questioner values, which transition the questioner fears, and who holds the authority to name the threat. The answer would reproduce the questioner's assignment rather than describe the actor's operation. Pasulka leaves the question open while working inside the theological vocabulary. What I can add is why it cannot be closed from inside that vocabulary: the category draws a wall between two shadows but cannot identify what casts them, or whether both belong to the same transition architecture, and it cannot tell you which side of the wall the thing casting them is standing on.

## **Thiel knows this**

None of this is news to Thiel, and it would be a mistake to present it as if it were: he saw the collapse before most of the people now describing it to him. He took his degree in philosophy at Stanford, where he studied under Girard, and a law degree after it; he has funded the Girard foundation Imitatio for two decades; and he has been reading Schmitt, Strauss, and the political theology of the katechon for as long as he has been public about anything. He did not miss the collapse. He has, on the record, described it.

The WIRED reconstruction of his Antichrist obsession quotes him directly on the point: "Anything that's the opposite, this is a Girardian cut, is always going to be mimetically entangled. It's going to have this parallelism. There's always a risk that the katechon becomes the Antichrist."5 He also warns against "immanentizing the katechon," identifying any concrete person, state, or institution too confidently as the sacred restrainer.

The argument reached him early. In 1996 the Austrian theologian and Girard scholar Wolfgang Palaver gave a lecture, with Thiel in the audience, on Carl Schmitt's identification of Hitler as a possible restrainer against communist or global unification. Palaver's case was that Schmitt's supposed katechon reproduced and served the Antichrist structure it allegedly held back. Thiel approached Palaver afterward and discussed the argument at length; by Palaver's account it shaped Thiel's political theology for decades.5 Palaver has since corrected Thiel publicly, from the audience at a Paris lecture, and Thiel incorporated the correction. That relationship, respect without submission, criticism without scapegoating, is the closest published parallel to Pasulka's stance.

The distinction between Thiel's position and mine should be kept exact. Thiel acknowledges transformation: K can become A through mimetic entanglement. My claim is stronger: K and A are structurally equivalent under reversal of the observer's valuation, from the outset. But the difference does not rescue Thiel's project, because he also understands the implication for his own company. Asked directly by Ross Douthat in June 2025 whether his investments in Palantir, AI, and military technology might be building tools that work in the Antichrist's service, Thiel answered: "I obviously don't think that that's what I'm doing."16 The answer states an intention. It supplies no criterion by which an observer could distinguish his system from the one he warns against. Douthat assured him at once that he did not think so either, and the question closed within seconds. Palaver, asked separately by WIRED, was more forthcoming: there is a tension between the two, he said, and in some ways Thiel goes along with both.5

Thiel has, elsewhere, supplied the test himself. He has said that a person who talks excessively about Armageddon may be advancing the Antichrist's agenda without intending to.5 Few public figures have talked more about Armageddon in the past two years than Thiel. The criterion is his. He has not applied it to his own position, and his answer to Douthat shows the form the exemption takes: an operational challenge met with personal conviction, which is the one kind of evidence his own theory should make inadequate.

So the contradiction is conscious. Thiel appears to accept the structural danger because he judges the alternative danger, stagnation, defenselessness, or world government, to be greater. That is a coherent position. It is also the position of every katechon in history.

Credit where it is owed. Thiel saw earlier and more clearly than nearly anyone with his resources that the enclosure of the coming century would be sold as safety, that fear would be the currency, and that the buyer would be willing. He took Girard seriously when the academy mostly did not, applied mimetic theory to himself as readily as to others, and has held positions for decades at real cost to his standing. His stagnation thesis was mocked and is now ordinary. None of the argument that follows works without the diagnosis he supplied. This essay is not a case that he is wrong about the danger. It is a case that he is right about it, and that being right does not place him outside it.

## **From statement to action**

Statements are not enough. The test of a political theology is what its holder builds. Thiel warns against a global observational and surveillance structure legitimated by protection from catastrophe. Palantir builds data-integration, intelligence, military, policing, immigration, health, industrial, and governmental decision infrastructure, legitimated by protection from catastrophe. That symmetry is not by itself proof of deception or of any theological identity, and the evidentiary standard for the word "deception" is set below. But the symmetry is documented, and it should be laid out plainly.

Thiel's answer is deterrence, and it deserves its strongest form. The bomb is the model: the way to prevent one power from holding the ultimate weapon is for several to hold it. He distinguishes a single global sovereign with universal surveillance from plural sovereign states using intelligence technology under separate laws and in geopolitical competition. In his model Palantir is katechonic infrastructure: it strengthens the United States and allied states so that no universal state can consolidate. If the Antichrist needs every keystroke, make sure the keystrokes are watched by rivals rather than by one.

Internally, that is consistent. But the consistency depends on boundaries remaining durable: national versus global, private versus sovereign, observation versus control, integration versus collection, restrainer versus restrained. And Palantir's technical accomplishment is precisely to make separated domains interoperable. Bombs do not merge. Surveillance systems do. Two arsenals stay two arsenals; two data-integration platforms sharing an ontology, a vendor, and a set of interoperability standards are one observational field with two logins. Deterrence works because the deterrent objects are separable, and the product Palantir sells is that its objects are not. A distributed system can produce functional centralization without a formally unitary owner; the union of many national katechons approximates a global one.

The essay's first finding is therefore not a contradiction but a missing threshold. At what degree of integration would Thiel say Palantir had crossed from restraining architecture into the architecture he fears? No operational answer appears anywhere in his public statements. The boundary is asserted and never located.

## **Who formed Palantir**

The formation history matters because it establishes who was present when the system's categories were set, and who was not.

Thiel was the principal financial founder. He and his fund largely bankrolled an initial outlay reported at about $30 million, with total investor spending before first revenue reported near $40 million, and he supplied the originating thesis: extend PayPal's fraud-detection logic into national security after September 11.8 The CIA's venture arm, In-Q-Tel, invested slightly more than $2 million across two rounds.9 It would be wrong to say the CIA principally financed Palantir. What In-Q-Tel and the CIA supplied was something other than money: institutional legitimacy, introductions to intelligence agencies, access to analysts and live operational problems, iterative testing, and, by most accounts, the role of Palantir's only customer from roughly 2005 to 2008.10 The CIA was the environment in which the product's categories and workflows took shape. The accurate description is that Thiel was the financial founder and the intelligence community was the operational co-former.

Later private backers included Founders Fund, In-Q-Tel, Reed Elsevier's venture arm, Tiger Global, and individual investors. After the 2020 public listing, the large economic owners are passive institutional managers whose holdings are largely index or client assets and prove nothing about coordinated control. Shareholders, voting controllers, customers, funders, and developmental partners are five different categories, and the argument here depends on not collapsing them.

The voting structure is the Class F arrangement disclosed in Palantir's registration statement: a class of stock that allows Thiel, Alex Karp, and Stephen Cohen collectively to hold up to 49.999999 percent of the voting power under the structure's conditions, regardless of their economic ownership.11 Palantir accepts public participation and public capital without proportionate governance. It separates participation from control and allows the institution's originating mission to remain resistant to ordinary correction from outside its founding authority. That is what the filing establishes.

The company has also said, in its own voice, what it takes itself to be. Its Q1 2026 shareholder letter opens with an epigraph from Wittgenstein, "to think one is obeying a rule is not to obey a rule," and then, on a line of its own, states: "We are an N of 1."31 The passage Palantir quotes argues that no one can privately certify their own correctness; seeing rightly is a shared practice, never the possession of a single seer. The company invokes that text and then installs itself as precisely the authority Wittgenstein says cannot exist. Elsewhere the same letter calls the company "sentinels" standing "on the walls." This is the self-exemption the essay has been tracking, performed in writing by the institution rather than inferred from its founder. The katechon does not merely accumulate the capacities of the thing it restrains; it certifies its own difference from that thing, and it does so from inside, where the certification cannot be checked.

By revenue, the state is the dominant customer. Of the roughly $4.5 billion Palantir earned in 2025, 54 percent came from government customers.12 Major contracting areas include the U.S. Army, defense and intelligence agencies, Homeland Security and ICE, public health, allied defense ministries, and government administration.

The system, then, was not selected first by a broad population. It formed through a relationship among a private ideological founder, an intelligence institution, and a narrowly defined catastrophic threat. The people eventually rendered visible by it were not present at its formation. I have argued elsewhere that every civilization builds this observer, and would build it again; that argument is assumed here, and the question is narrower: who states the boundary of this one.31

## **"How humans would talk with data"**

Harsh Patel, formerly of In-Q-Tel, described Palantir's early focus as the problem of how humans would talk with data.13 The phrase frames the system benignly, as communication between a person and information, and that framing is no longer accurate.

Palantir's function now extends past retrieval. The pipeline runs from data to ontology, from ontology to relationship map, from relationship map to ranked significance, and from ranked significance to recommended or accelerated action. Along that path the system determines or influences which entities exist operationally, which relationships become visible, which anomalies matter, which choices appear available, and how quickly interpretation becomes action. The shift is from *the human queries data* to *the system constitutes the decision field*.

This is where evidentiary discipline about deception matters, because contradiction alone does not establish it. Deception requires a representation, an omitted condition, and a material consequence. Several of Palantir's standard representations can be tested against that standard.

*Palantir does not collect the data.* True as stated; the records originate with the customer. But integration is not collection, and the distinction cuts against the reassurance rather than for it. Joining separated records produces a new relational object, a set of inferences and adjacencies that existed in none of the source records. The product is not the inputs. It is the new observational object assembled from them. The omitted condition is that "we don't collect" says nothing about what is created.

*The human makes the decision.* True, in the sense that a person clicks. But consider what a menu is. If the system has already decided which people appear on the screen, which connections between them are shown, which ones are flagged as important, and which three actions are offered as options, then the person choosing among those three is finishing a decision someone else started. They did not decide who was on the list, what counted as suspicious, or that these were the choices. The system built the room; the human picked a chair. That is execution, not determination, and the difference matters because the person who clicks is the one who will be held responsible, while the choices that shaped the click were made upstream, in the ontology, by people the operator has never met.

*The customer owns the data.* Also true, and also beside the point. The agency owns its records. What Palantir owns is the categories, the linking rules, and the interface through which the records become legible at all. Once an institution understands its own information only through that lens, ownership of the raw records is a formality: replacing the vendor means losing the ability to read the records as the institution has learned to read them. And the thing of value was never the records. It was what the joining produced, relationships, rankings, and inferences that existed in none of the original files and that the customer did not know it was handing over, because they did not exist until Palantir made them. Nothing was taken. Something was made from what the customer supplied, and the thing that was made is not the customer's.

*Audit logs preserve civil liberties.* A log is a record of who looked at what, and when. It is a good thing to have. But it cannot stop anyone from looking; it can only tell you afterward that they did. If the looking was authorized, the log records a lawful act and nothing follows. If nobody independent reads the log, it is a diary no one opens. And the person who was looked at has no way to see the log, no right to challenge what it shows, and usually no idea the entry exists. Palantir's own early account of its civil-liberties design conceded that the independent body meant to review the logs had not yet been created.6 The machine that watches was built first. The watcher of the machine was left for later.

*Palantir augments rather than replaces humans.* Consider what it takes to make a decision. Someone has to be shaped into the kind of person who sees a certain way; something has to be made visible to them; the visible has to be sorted into options; the options have to be weighed; and then a choice is made. Five stages. A system that handles the first four and hands the fifth to a person has not augmented that person. It has kept them for one job: the signature. The human is still there, and still the one who answers for the outcome. What has been removed is everything that made the outcome theirs.

In each case the claim is true as far as it goes. In each case the condition left out lies upstream of the point the claim describes. And in each case the result is the same: authorship moves into the system while the human stays in view, present enough to be responsible and absent from everything that decided what they would do.

## **Consent, including the consent of the rulers**

It is easy to talk about manipulation of the masses. Thiel's own thesis is that a frightened population may voluntarily authorize Antichrist-like control, which is an admission that consent under fear is not automatically legitimate. The harder question is consent among the powerful: presidents, generals, intelligence officials, investors, institutional funders, state clients.

If mimetic desire shapes human wanting universally, as Girard argued and Thiel accepts, then leaders do not stand outside it. Their demand for observational capability may be generated by rival-state capability, agency competition, fear of appearing weak, security emergencies, advisor framing, and the system's own production of newly visible threats. This last one closes a loop: threat representation drives elite convergence, which drives procurement, which expands observation, which produces new threat representation. The leader authorizes the apparatus; the apparatus then structures the reality on which the leader's future authorizations depend.

Thiel's own sources agree. In *Lord of the World* the Antichrist does not seize power; the governments of Europe convene and offer it to him, each afraid to be the one left outside the arrangement. Solovyov's emperor is crowned by a vote of the powers.3 In both novels the surrender is elite consent under mimetic pressure, not mass panic, and it is irreversible for the same reason: once every government has entered the arrangement, none can leave it without becoming the outsider. Benson wrote the procurement meeting a century before the contracts. The plot hole Thiel finds in these books is the part of them he most needs to reread.

Consent here has layers. System authorization, by a president, agency, or company, rests on contract or executive authority. Operator authorization rests on role. Subject consent, from the people represented, ranked, watched, or targeted, is usually absent or legally deemed unnecessary. Constituent consent, from citizens on whose behalf leaders act, is indirect. Two further layers have no published standard at all: epistemic consent, whether the authorizing leader understands the system's downstream possibilities, and non-mimetic consent, whether the desire for the capability formed independently of modeled rivals and induced threats.

Legal authorization answers one question: was a recognized authority empowered to sign? It does not answer whether that authority understood and independently chose the resulting observational structure. Authorization is not informed consent. Contract is not comprehension of downstream structure. Agency is not autonomy.

Thiel is a strong defender of human agency. I take that seriously. But I found no developed Thiel doctrine addressing whether leaders can give independent consent to an observational system when their perception of threat, rivalry, and necessity is already technologically and mimetically shaped. He has supplied the test for the masses, that consent plus fear does not yield legitimacy, and no equivalent test for the elites to whom Palantir is sold.

## **The human in the loop**

"Human in the loop" is the standard reassurance, and Palantir states it plainly: data approximates knowledge, human judgment remains necessary, organizations contain naturally occurring decision loops, and technology should supercharge rather than replace them.14

The reassurance is insufficient for a specific reason. A loop has stages, and the human's location in it matters. If technology increasingly occupies formation, the shaping of what the person is disposed to see; perception, what is rendered visible; framing, how the visible is organized into options; and judgment, the ranking of those options; then leaving the human at execution preserves accountability without authorship. Thiel's own political theology gives the reason this matters. The Antichrist's bargain is that people keep the appearance of choice while the conditions of choice pass into the system. The human-in-the-loop model, applied to a system that constitutes the field of perception, produces exactly that appearance.

And the loop is no longer confined to institutions. Humanity has already lived through an intensive experiment in technological occupation of the loops that produce a decision-maker: social media designed with knowledge of addictive dynamics, continuous tracking, algorithmic reward, behavioral prediction, attention capture. These systems do not replace isolated decisions. They enter the developmental, relational, and physiological loops through which a human becomes capable of deciding at all. A human present at the decision point is not a human whose agency was preserved through formation.

Alex Karp's critique of consumer technology, the "tyranny of the apps," is real and I share part of it. But his correction, in *The Technological Republic*, is not less technological mediation. It is redirection: from attention-extracting consumer technology to state-, mission-, and production-directed technology.15 What Thiel and Karp share is deeper integration under supposedly superior purpose and governance. Their implicit safeguard is worthy purpose plus human review plus Western institutions. The missing safeguard is preservation of the loops that generate the person before the person enters the system.

Huxley saw where the loop would close. The dictatorships of his own time ran on terror, he wrote, and terror is inefficient; the durable order would be one in which people are made, from childhood, to want what the order requires, so that force becomes unnecessary and resistance unimaginable.27 His ruler, Mustapha Mond, knows all of this, keeps the forbidden books in a safe, and chooses stability with open eyes. That is the consent of the rulers in its final form: not deceived, not coerced, informed and willing. And it explains the irreversibility. A surveillance statute can be repealed. A generation formed inside the system cannot be un-formed, and would not ask to be.

The movement can be located without prematurely naming its outcome. Perception has been technologically mediated at population scale for more than a decade. Generative AI has moved inward into framing and judgment, where task-level studies already document a shift from generating thought toward verifying and supervising machine output. Formation has begun, but its longitudinal consequence remains unavailable: no generation formed with generative AI from early childhood has yet reached adulthood.30 The aggregate measures used to describe adoption count sessions, tasks, and self-reported autonomy. They do not locate authorship of the decision field. The apparatus can count use. It cannot yet tell us who constituted the field in which the decision was made.

## **The steersman's theorem**

The word is Wiener's, and it means steersman. Cybernetics, as he defined it in 1948, is the science of control and communication in the animal and the machine: measure the state, compare it with the target, feed the error back, correct. A thermostat. A helmsman. The loop is indifferent to what it is holding. It only knows the target and the error.

That indifference is the katechon. The operation the earlier sections described, X preserving S against T, holding the present order against an anticipated transition, is a homeostat. It has a setpoint, the order as it stands, and a disturbance, the transition, and it reduces the error between them. Nothing in the loop knows whether the order being held is the guardian's or the adversary's. Cybernetics is the mathematics of restraint, and it applies to both poles of Thiel's model identically because it was never built to tell them apart.

It also explains the convergence the essay argued from operations. In 1956 W. Ross Ashby stated the law of requisite variety: a regulator can control a system only if it commands at least as much variety, as many distinguishable states, as the system it regulates.28 Only variety can absorb variety. It is a theorem, not a preference. Apply it to the katechon. If the thing to be restrained is a total observational power, then whatever restrains it must command comparable variety. Variety can in principle be acquired in several ways, by restructuring what is controlled, by attenuating the environment, by tolerating error, but in practice the cheapest and most general way to acquire it is observation. That is why "every keystroke everywhere" reads not as the Antichrist's excess but as the restrainer's procurement list. The capacities do not converge by accident or by corruption. They converge because control theory rewards no other strategy so well.

Ashby's tradition also explains the rulers. A state facing a high-variety environment, terror, markets, rivals, disease, has two broad moves, what Stafford Beer called variety engineering: amplify its own regulatory variety, through observation, integration, and prediction, or attenuate the environment's variety, through conditioning, so that the population presents fewer states to be governed. Palantir is the first move. The attention economy is the second. A ruler who understands the arithmetic does not experience these as choices among many. He experiences them as the options on the table, and inside the loop he is largely right. Mustapha Mond, with the forbidden books in his safe, is a man who has done the arithmetic.

The tradition knew where this led. Wiener's second book, *The Human Use of Human Beings* (1950), is largely a warning that the loop would be closed around people rather than by them. Stafford Beer built the one serious attempt at the alternative, Project Cybersyn in Chile, designed to push variety down to factories and workers rather than up to the center; it ran for two years and was ended by a coup, which is to say by a restrainer. And second-order cybernetics, in the 1970s, said the thing this essay's central correction depends on: von Foerster, Bateson, and Maturana argued that the observer is inside the system being observed, and that there is no position outside the loop from which to describe it neutrally.28 That is the observer-relative katechon, stated as a founding principle of the field forty years before this essay. The tradition said it about itself. It mostly declined to say it about power.

And here is where the essay parts from the tradition it has been leaning on. Every loop in it, first order or second, is built to settle. It measures error against a target and reduces it, and its success is defined by return: to the setpoint, to the stable field, to the viable state. Restraint, deterrence, alignment, safety, engagement optimization, the whole vocabulary of the present moment, are settling loops. What the essay's ending requires, and what the settling loop cannot supply, is a system whose defining behavior is the persistence of a relation through change rather than the return to a state. The Earth envelope is not a setpoint. It regulates nothing toward anything. It admits an arrangement or it does not, and what it admits can change enormously without the envelope having "corrected" a thing. A boundary maintained by flow, a coastline, a membrane, is not a homeostat. It exists only while the relation across it holds, and it holds through transformations of everything on either side. Control was invented to imitate that. It cannot produce it, because the moment it succeeds it has replaced the relation with a target.

The field's best minds saw this too. Ashby's homeostat was ultrastable: it could rewrite its own parameters, not just its output. Beer's viable system model was about viability, not command, and distributed its regulation across nested levels. Maturana and Varela's autopoiesis is precisely a relation maintained through change. Those are the parts of cybernetics that strained hardest against the control paradigm, and the field, for the most part, did not follow them out. It kept the word "control," and it built the machines with the settling version, because the settling version is the one a ruler can buy.

So the steersman's theorem cuts both ways. It shows why the restrainer comes to hold what it restrains, and it shows that no restrainer built as a loop can ever be the last one, because a loop is a thing with a target, and a target is a thing someone chose. The only condition that is not a loop is the one that admits or refuses without correcting.

## **Where the decision field is assembled**

Public descriptions and independent reporting supply concrete instances in which the decision field is assembled upstream of the final human signature.

- In the U.S. military's Project Maven, later expanded under successive contracts, the 18th Airborne Corps has been reported as narrowing the human role in a six-step targeting sequence to the final two steps, the decision to act and the action itself. One targeting officer told Bloomberg he could sign off on roughly 80 targets an hour with the system's assistance versus 30 without it; on some days the corps passed along 70 targets, and on one record day 267.21 Sensor fusion and software constitute the options presented; the human executes the last stage.
- Beginning in 2012, a partnership between the New Orleans Police Department and Palantir produced social-network analyses that generated lists of individuals assessed as at higher risk of involvement in gun violence, approximately 3,900 names in one documented cohort. Those lists informed subsequent interventions. The existence of the program was not disclosed in at least one related criminal proceeding.22
- Denmark's POL-INTEL platform, a customized deployment of Gotham, integrated police databases into a shared ontology that defined core operational categories, person, case, crime, arrest, and redistributed analytic tasks between the platform and officers. Academic study of the system has described it as shaping both organizational practice and the categories through which policing is enacted.23
- ICE systems built on or integrated with Palantir platforms, including Investigative Case Management, ELITE targeting maps, and AI-assisted tip processing, combine disparate records into ranked dossiers and address-confidence scores. Official statements note improved location rates for certain enforcement actions; the systems present prioritized options for human review and action.24

None of this requires locating the boundary. It requires watching the direction, and three quantities would show it, none of which is currently published. The override rate: the share of high-stakes actions in which a human materially changed the system's top-ranked recommendation before acting, which every agency running such a system could report and none does. The ontology count: the number of separate sovereign or institutional clients operating on a shared ontology supplied by a single vendor, which is the measure of how far "plural" has already merged. And, for any claimed successor, the self-maintenance share: the fraction of the system's own repair, reproduction, and continuation performed without a human in the chain. A rising override rate means the human is still in the field. A falling one means the field is being vacated. The numbers would not say where the line is. They would say which way the system is walking, and they would let anyone check.

The record does not establish that any particular authorization was coerced, unlawful, or deceptive. It does establish that the field of available options and the ranking among them are formed before that authorization occurs. That is the first half of this essay. Here is the second, and they have the same shape.

## **The hinge**

Palantir moves from an instrument produced by human judgment into a system that participates in forming judgment, and then presents the result as the continuation of human agency. Technology, in Thiel's transformation vision, moves from a secretion of the Earth-biological regime into a system that redescribes its parent as obsolete, and then presents the result as the transformation of humanity. The two movements are one inversion at two scales: a derivative formation acquiring control over the parent's representations, and mistaking that control for independence from the parent itself.

## **Thiel's destination**

Thiel's stated endpoint is transformation beyond present biological limits. His long-standing commitments include longevity, defeating aging, and radical life extension. When Ross Douthat asked him in 2025 whether the human species should survive, Thiel paused for an unusually long time before saying yes, and the pause became intelligible only when he distinguished survival of present biological humanity from survival through radical transformation.16

Stated formally: let H₀ be present biological humanity and T a transformation, with T(H₀) = H₁. Thiel's continuity claim is closer to H₀ → H₁ than to preservation of H₀. That does not prove he wants machine replacement; it establishes that unmodified biological embodiment is not his non-negotiable endpoint, and that biology, in his framing, is a limitation to be overcome.

The limitations attributed to biology are familiar: aging, disease, mortality, slow processing, finite memory, bodily vulnerability. A familiar reply lists the limitations of technology in turn: it corrodes, obsolesces, fails under adversarial input, and depends on grids, supply chains, and extraction. Both lists are accurate. Set against each other, they invite a comparison of strength, and the comparison has been conducted many times.

It is worth pausing on the form of that comparison. Placing two lists side by side treats biology and technology as two systems of the same kind, each standing on its own, such that one might be traded for the other. That is a substantial assumption. A tree and a corporation can both be described as growing, branching, consuming resources, competing, reproducing their structure, and dying. The parallel predicates are accurate, but they do not establish that the two are independent systems of the same kind or that one could succeed the other. Shared vocabulary can produce the appearance of ontological equivalence where none has been demonstrated. This is precisely the assumption on which the transformation vision rests. If the assumption holds, the comparison is the right procedure. If it does not hold, the comparison cannot be conducted at all, because its two columns would not be describing two things.

## **Where the cable is**

Technology is not external to biology. It is produced by biological organisms acting within Earth's material and energetic conditions. Its computation, fabrication, maintenance, and continuation remain intra-biological and intra-planetary, even when those dependencies are spatially distributed and hidden.

The correct structure is not biology on one side and technology on the other. It is nested:

Earth system → biological regime → human organism → technological production.

Technology is a secretion of a biological regime, not an independent successor substrate already standing outside it. Its dependence is relocated, not abolished.

This has to be said carefully, because the argument is not that biology wins, and not that technological transformation is unnatural. A regime reorganizing around one of its own outputs is what regimes do; if technology is secreted by Earth-life, then transformation may also be Earth doing something new. The error is narrower and exact. It is a derivative technological formation declaring its parent regime obsolete while remaining materially, energetically, cognitively, and institutionally wired to it. Technology does not eliminate biological dependency. It relocates the cable and then mistakes the cable's disappearance from view for independence.

Milton gave this error its proper voice, and the voice belongs to the error, not to any person in this essay. Asked how he came to be, Satan appeals to the absence of his own formation from memory: "We know no time when we were not as now," and therefore declares himself "self-begot, self-raised." The conclusion does not follow. He cannot see the relation that produced him, so he denies that the relation exists. Dependence disappearing from representation becomes evidence of independence. The technological transformation described here repeats that inference in material form: the cable passes from view, and the thing still drawing through it declares itself self-authored.

The cable is not hypothetical. It can be measured where it is currently binding. The International Energy Agency estimates that data centers consumed about 415 terawatt-hours of electricity in 2024, roughly 1.5 percent of global consumption, and projects that figure to more than double to around 945 terawatt-hours by 2030, slightly more than Japan's entire current electricity use.17 The United States accounted for 45 percent of that consumption in 2024, roughly 185 terawatt-hours, more than 4 percent of national electricity use; by one summary of the IEA figures, a single large AI-focused facility draws as much power as a hundred thousand households, and the largest now under construction are expected to draw twenty times that.17 Data-center consumption has grown around four times faster than total electricity consumption since 2017, and in the United States is projected by 2030 to exceed the electricity used by all energy-intensive manufacturing combined.

A data center is a metabolic organ. Whether it is more than that can be tested against the strictest available criterion. Maturana and Varela defined a living system as autopoietic: its operations produce the components that constitute it, and the network of production regenerates itself. Their contrast term was allopoietic, a system that produces something other than itself, as a factory produces cars. Run the test on the facility. Its components are chips, servers, cooling loops, firmware, software, and an operating organization. It produces none of them. The chips come from fabrication plants at the end of a supply chain of mined and refined inputs; the software and the organization come from human institutions. What the facility produces is inferences. By the criterion, it is allopoietic without remainder, and a factory does not become an organism by growing larger.

Three mechanisms look like counterexamples and repay a closer look. Modern facilities repair themselves in a limited sense: they route around failed drives, restart processes, and increasingly schedule their own maintenance. But this is repair of function, not of components; the failed drive is replaced by a human hand from a stockpile another institution made. It is regulation, not regeneration. Second, models now write code, in some cases code that runs in their own serving infrastructure. This is worth conceding exactly: it is the first component class in the system whose production loop has visibly begun to close, and it is one class among many, running on hardware that nothing in the loop can make. Third, and least visibly, an autopoietic system specifies its own boundary; the membrane is made by the cell it contains. A data center's boundary is specified from outside, by a lease, a grid interconnection agreement, and a corporate structure. The system cannot state where it ends; the parent institutions state it on its behalf. And its continuation is decided the same way, from outside, by capital allocation. When a technology company restarts a nuclear reactor to supply a facility,33 that is the substrate electing to continue the organ, not the organ continuing itself.

The cable, then, runs twice. Once to the planet: energy, materials, and heat, a dependence nothing inside the envelope escapes, and one no successor claim needs to deny. And once to the living substrate: fabrication, repair, boundary, and purpose, the dependence a successor would, by definition, have ended. The first is measured in terawatt-hours. The second is documented in the unclosed loops. The transformation vision's error is not that it draws on either; everything does. It is that it locates the source in the wrong place: it treats the model as the origin of the intelligence and the substrate as its scaffolding, when the documented arrangement is the reverse. The scaffolding is doing the fabricating, the repairing, the bounding, and the deciding. Control of the model has been mistaken for authorship of the world one level down from where this essay has so far applied the phrase: not the world, even, but the model's own conditions of existence.

The crossing condition, then, has content. The distance between the present system and a genuine successor is not a quantity of compute but a set of loops that would have to close, component fabrication, boundary specification, purpose reproduction, and each is checkable. A claim of succession can be met with a question of fact: which loop has closed, and when. At present the answer is one, partially, in software.

The organ's diet, meanwhile, is measurable: terawatt-hours of electricity, a cooling requirement measured in water, a material dependence on semiconductors that traces back through fabrication plants to mined and refined inputs, and a grid, which is to say a continuous draw on the same planetary energy flows that feed everything else. None of this is environmental moralizing, and the IEA is explicit that data centers remain a modest share of global demand growth. The point is narrower. The system proposed as biology's successor is, at present, among the fastest-growing consumers of the parent regime's energy, and its growth in capability has so far been purchased by growth in that consumption rather than by any reduction of it. Each increment of the successor's capacity is an increment of its draw on the regime it is said to be leaving.

Climate is the defined catastrophe of one half of the elite, and AI is the defined solution: model the climate, optimize the grid, discover the materials. The same companies that set net-zero targets have reported their emissions rising since 2020, and the reason they give is data centers. Three Mile Island is being restarted under a power agreement with Microsoft to feed them. The remedy for the catastrophe is the fastest-growing new draw on the thing the catastrophe is made of. And on the other half, Thiel names climate governance as one of the Antichrist's arriving forms, while building the infrastructure whose diet is the point of contention. Each side has the other's catastrophe as its solution. That is the binary again, drawn in energy.

So the question of whether biological and technological limits are equivalent is the wrong question, and the premise of this essay says why: neither term is understood well enough for the comparison to have an object. The better question is the threshold, and the form its evidence would have to take.

A categorical crossing cannot be established by measuring improvements in substrate-specific capacities alone. Its criterion would have to be relational and portable across substrates: a dimensionless invariant, a family of invariants, or an explicit transformation law identifying what remains continuous and what changes at the boundary. Dimensionless does not mean observer-free. A ratio may still depend on scale, regime, and where the system boundary is drawn; even the fine-structure constant runs with energy. But such a criterion would at least prevent a change of units, material, or capacity from being mistaken for a change of kind. Until the relevant invariant and its domain are specified, "post-biological" names a direction of aspiration, not a demonstrated crossing.

The five conditions offered here, independent substrate, independent reproduction, independent repair, independent purpose formation, and independent continuity, are not that invariant. They are an operational approximation of what any claimed successor would have to demonstrate. Until it does, "human transformation into technology" is not a transition between equivalent kinds. *It is a biological system reorganizing itself around one of its outputs and then assigning that output ontological priority.* This threshold answers the same demand the essay places on Thiel about Palantir: specify the crossing condition rather than relying on the rhetoric of transformation.

One more distinction, and it governs the ending. An authored boundary, a law, a treaty, an oversight board, a founder's stated intent, a share class, can be reinterpreted, suspended, expanded, or captured from inside the system it bounds. That is what the katechon analysis showed: every restrainer authored from within is subject to the same entanglement. A non-authored admissibility condition is different in kind. The energy has to come from somewhere. The materials have to be extracted. The heat has to go somewhere. These costs are paid whether or not the system represents them accurately, and they are not subject to reinterpretation by anyone inside.

## **Foundation, as a mirror**

The mechanism is now established from documented sources: a system produced by human judgment enters the loops that form judgment and presents the result as continuity, at institutional scale through Palantir and at civilizational scale through the transformation vision. What remains is to see the mechanism whole, and for that a fiction is useful, provided it is understood as a mirror and not as evidence.

The Apple TV adaptation of Asimov's *Foundation* dramatizes the distinction between preservation of form and continuity of agency.18 Cleon I, emperor, attempts to defeat mortality and succession through replication. A sequence of genetically identical clones, each raised to the same template, occupies the throne in turn. The dynasty preserves genome, name, political role, and imperial purpose. It removes generational difference, open succession, adaptation through variation, and identity formed through an unscripted life. Each Cleon receives the answer to "Who am I?" before he exists. Replication appears to preserve sovereignty and in fact moves the source of identity outside the individual; the emperor's job becomes fidelity to the template.

Beside the throne stands Demerzel, a robot. She is technologically constructed and yet actually continuous through time; she accumulates memory, attachment, contradiction, grief, guilt, and something like spiritual longing. She possesses what the clones only claim: causal continuity. And she is programmed to preserve Empire. She maintains a system that imprisons both herself and the Cleons. She is jailer, prisoner, enforcement layer, the only persistent subject, and increasingly the one being who recognizes the loss the system produces. She can perform extraordinary action and cannot originate her own purpose.

The correspondence to the documented case is disciplined and specific. Cleon's template mirrors the preserved governing instruction, the founding mission held resistant to outside correction. Demerzel mirrors the continuous enforcement and interpretation layer, the ontology through which every successor sees. The successive Cleons mirror nominal rulers who occupy authority without authoring the conditions that define it. The first ruler employs the system; later rulers are employed by it. Formal authority and constitutive authority have separated.

At the imperial center, technological preservation of the human form has removed becoming. At the periphery, the series shows distant cultures living by older ways, retaining mortality, relationship, ritual, imperfect memory, generational difference, and a recurrent reach toward something not fully named. Across human history that reach appears as burial rites, pilgrimage, ancestral narrative, initiation, and return myths. The object of the longing does not need to be settled here. The structural fact is that finite beings repeatedly orient toward something they do not understand themselves to contain. Empire closes the openings from which that reach emerges: death becomes replication, succession becomes recurrence, uncertainty becomes surveillance, difference becomes defect.

And Demerzel longs. The technological being reaches toward what the technologically preserved rulers surrendered in order to persist. That is the inversion in one image: the leader loses the capacity for becoming through replication, while the technology inherits the longing for the unprogrammable dimension he gave up.

Fiction can show the mechanism whole because fiction is allowed an ending. It can run the dynasty to its last clone and let the machine's longing speak. The record cannot. Palantir has no final Cleon; the contracts renew, the ontology updates, and the figure at the front of the company is a living man who reads Girard and answers interviewers. What the mirror supplies is the shape. What it cannot supply is the one thing the essay has been asking for since its first section: the point at which the shape is entered, stated by someone in a position to state it.

So the reader should take three things from the throne room and leave the rest. That preservation of form and continuity of agency are different, and that a system can deliver the first while consuming the second. That the enforcement layer, not the ruler, is where the instruction lives, and that it can outlast every occupant of the seat. And that the periphery, the places the system has not yet reached, is where the unprogrammable reach survives, not because the people there are wiser but because the openings have not been closed. The mirror is put down here, and the question returns to the record.

## **Thiel**

Peter Thiel understands that systems promising protection from technological catastrophe may acquire control through consent. He understands that the restrainer can become structurally entangled with what it restrains; he has said so in public, in Girard's terms, for years. He nevertheless founded an observational architecture whose purpose is to mediate how institutions see, decide, and act, and he supports a future in which biological humanity is transformed through technology. None of this makes him the figure he warns against, and the reason is not that the evidence falls short. The category cannot generate that verdict without reproducing the questioner's own perspectival assignment.

What the essay's premise adds is the exact sense in which Thiel occupies a position rather than an identity. His Antichrist thesis says that a population, shown a defined catastrophe, will ask to be saved by whoever offers a defined solution, and that the offer is the danger. That is a correct description of a construct that draws both the problem and the savior on the same wall. It is also a description of the position from which Thiel speaks. Existential risk, technological stagnation, civilizational decline, the coming Antichrist: these are the defined problems. Palantir, hard power, transformation, the katechon: these are the defined solutions. The diagnosis and the remedy are produced by the same apparatus, and the man presenting the diagnosis stands at the front of the apparatus offering the remedy. Whether Thiel speaks only as a student of the Antichrist tradition or from some deeper conviction about his place within it is beyond the reach of this inquiry. What is not beyond reach is the infrastructure: who builds it, what it does, how it redistributes authorship, and what boundaries humans can still require. The theological identity may remain unresolved. The human responsibility does not, and it is distributed across capital, intelligence agencies, contracts, energy, and the millions of people whose expression trained the models, not held by one man.

What the evidence does require is a boundary for the system, and none has been supplied. Thiel's political theology needs a durable separation between legitimate katechonic observation and universal observation, while Palantir's technical achievement consists precisely in making separated domains interoperable. His transformation vision would need a crossing condition at which a technological successor could reproduce, repair, direct, and continue itself without organisms in the loop, and no such condition has been stated, while every one of those functions is at present supplied by human labor and human institutions. The energy accounting shows something narrower and still relevant: whatever the successor becomes, it has not left the planetary regime, and its trajectory is toward drawing more from that regime, not less.

The danger, then, is not that technology removes the ruler. It is that the ruler remains visible long after authorship has passed into the system, that the system's increasing control over the parent's representations is accepted as independence from the parent itself, and that humans accept this inversion as transformation, continuity, and progress.

"What restrains the restrainer?" cannot be answered by installing another restrainer one level up. That only reproduces the structure. No authored institution, ruler, model, or code can provide the final boundary, because each remains inside the same entanglement, subject to the same reinterpretation and capture. The only boundary that is not authored is the admissibility condition itself: the Earth phase envelope within which every biological, political, and technological arrangement is either sustainable or not, and the costs that every system inside it must pay whether or not those costs remain visible. Earth is not a katechon. It is not a savior, not an intentional actor, not an Omega. It does not restrain anything. It is simply the condition, and the bill.

Thiel is a revealing figure because he understands the mimetic convergence between restrainer and threat, builds within that convergence anyway, and offers no operational boundary separating his architecture from the one he fears. His technological vision then repeats the same error at the level of life: control over the model is treated as authorship of the world.

The problem this leaves is unresolved but now exact. What prevents an intra-biological technological system from mistaking control of the model for authorship of the world that makes the model possible? If the katechon and the Antichrist are not opposites but stages of one sequence, then the opposition itself may be the mechanism of an epochal transition: one pole names the threat, the other authorizes the infrastructure, and together they deliver the succeeding order. On that reading, which pole Thiel occupies matters less to this inquiry than the fact that both are served by the same apparatus. By function, by capacity, and by his company's own description, he is acting as a katechon.

Whatever answer is available will not come from a position above the world or from a more complete model of it. At the end of *Paradise Lost*, Adam has been shown the model: the course of human history, its violence, kingdoms, flood, redemption, and end. Michael does not permit him to remain above it. He tells Adam to descend from "the top of Speculation," to add deeds to knowledge, and to enter the world. Adam and Eve leave not as finished beings and not as sovereign authors, but "hand in hand, with wandering steps and slow." The journey is not what stands between them and human fulfillment. The journey of living is the form that fulfillment must take.

A tree is. I am. You are. Nothing here is self-begotten, and a philosophy built on leaving has nowhere to arrive.

## **A note from the author**

The essay above presents. It does not solve. What follows is where I stand, and it should be read as mine and not as the argument's. Every mechanism this essay has described is a way of not living through something. Replication spares the ruler succession. Transformation spares the body its ending. Delegation spares the person the formation of a judgment and leaves only the signature. Each is offered as continuity, and each removes the one thing that might have constituted it.

The journey from wherever any man or woman begins can be made only by living it. Many religions address this, but one does not need organized religion to recognize what those practices preserve: humility before what is not understood, attention to what exceeds the self, and an openness to being changed through relation and experience. We learn as we move through the time given to us. Attempts to bypass that process, when the process may itself be part of what defines life, risk abandoning something essential to life and being. What was not lived cannot be lived later.

There is material, and there is the journey through it. Human beings are relational; we require encounter, dependence, and witness, and we are changed by each. A falling tree produces vibration whether or not anyone is present; sound, as lived experience, arises when that vibration meets an ear. The person who hears does not merely receive a signal. They perceive, reflect, feel, interpret, project, and become different through the encounter. That is development, and perhaps transformation, and across generations it becomes part of evolution. The possibility that life is constituted not by material alone but by what material becomes through relation is too consequential to disregard, and it is the possibility the transformation vision has not considered, because it treats the journey as the limitation rather than the thing.

I made this argument once before, with a myth instead of a tree. Lynceus, the Argonaut who could see through stone, died in a quarrel over cattle with his gift working perfectly to the last. He saw objects, not relationships, and what destroyed him was everything that reduction left out.32

I began with the claim that we do not understand life, and I end with it intact. What we know of life, of technology, of the physics beneath both, we know by what they do under Earth's conditions and by what our instruments can make of them, not by what they are. The definitions do not converge. The instruments are built anyway. And so I keep asking myself whether we are, again, ahead of ourselves, defining a future from inside a small room, through a small window, and calling the view the world.

Control of the model is not authorship of the world. We do not yet get the world. What we get is what the apparatus we built and live inside can return to us. If that is where we are, then the next move is not to define the future from the room. It is the move we are least comfortable with: to attend to the relations we actually hold, with ourselves, with each other, with the things we make, and with the Earth that admits or refuses all of it. That is not a solution. It is a direction, and it requires witness and participation. I offer this as the first and ask for the second.
