# The Footprint Question: Evidence Across Regimes

### *An open problem, posed for contribution*

Suppose we say, "The mathematics requires X."

Does the mathematics require X inside the model in which the necessity was established, or has something also established that the necessity itself survives a transition into a regime with different admissible relations?

That distinction is not where the paper begins. It is what remains after the question it poses was put through an adversarial pass, a condensed contribution, included here in full, that spent what could be spent and named what it could not. A claim can be rigorously necessary within a formalism without yet being licensed outside it. Evidence can leave a measurable footprint here without giving us the ontology that produced it. And a principle that works perfectly within one regime may still need an account of why it can be exported across the boundary of that regime at all.

The question has survived several attempts to narrow it; the narrowing made it more precise rather than dissolving it. That exchange is part of the record below, because the question working is the point. What remains is not a proposed theory of what lies beyond the regime, but a question about the standards by which anyone could legitimately make such a claim.

## **The question**

We prove things on Earth. We prove things within classical mechanics. We prove things within quantum mechanics. We prove things within general relativity. We prove things within thermodynamics. We prove things within whatever larger regime contains those regimes. And if there is a regime with different admissible relations, we prove things there according to what can be observed and instantiated there.

That paragraph sounds uncontroversial. Modern physics already lives by it: the Standard Model describes itself as an effective theory, valid up to a cutoff, explicitly agnostic about what lies beyond, explicitly expecting different relations upstream. Newton was not overthrown by Einstein; his mechanics is recovered from Einstein's as an excellent limiting approximation, effective in its regime, silent outside it. Empirical warrant, in practice, is regime-local.

But follow the paragraph one step further and it turns into a problem that nobody owns.

Every observer is instantiated in one regime. Every instrument is instantiated in the same one. Every measurement ever recorded, every interference pattern, every detector count, every clock, was made here, by apparatus built here, read by minds running here. Quantum science itself, the most precise instrument of knowledge our species has produced, is an activity conducted entirely within the regime it describes.

So here is the question, in two parts:

I am not asking rhetorically. I am asking because I don't have the answer, I suspect no single field has it, and I think it can be worked on.

## **Why the question is live, not idle**

One observation is enough to show the question has teeth, so here it is.

In gravitational physics, a family of results, the Bekenstein bound, the holographic conjectures, points at something strange: the maximum information a region can hold appears to scale with the region's boundary *area*, not its volume. Whatever the final interpretation of those results turns out to be, the area-scaling alone is enough for the present point: spatial extension and informational capacity are different quantities, and our regime's habit of letting the first stand in for the second is a bookkeeping convention, one the regime itself, at its own measurable edges, declines to honor.

That does not prove an upstream regime exists. It shows something smaller and more important: a category our regime uses to organize experience is already known to bend *inside* the regime, at boundaries we can calculate. Which makes it a fair question, not a mystical one, whether such categories are local conventions of a larger arrangement. And the moment that is a fair question, the justification problem opens: by what method could anyone here ever legitimately say anything about the larger arrangement?

## **What an answer would look like**

To keep contributions from dissolving into vibes, here is what I think an answer owes. Disagree with these criteria too, if you like, but say so explicitly.

An answer should name the **inferential step**: the specific move that carries a claim from observables here to a statement about a regime not instantiable here. Extrapolation? Consistency requirement? Mathematical necessity? Indirect signature? Something else?

An answer should name **what licenses that step**, why the move is legitimate rather than hopeful. Precedent counts: physics has crossed such gaps before. Dirac's equation demanded antimatter before anyone saw it, mathematical necessity licensed the claim, and the positron arrived four years later. Bell's theorem converted a metaphysical dispute about hidden realities into an inequality measurable in a lab, he found the footprint that a class of upstream claims must\* leave here, and experiments then checked for it. Those are two different licenses. Are there others? Is there a complete list?

An answer should satisfy a **non-idle surplus** test, applied to *descriptions*, not to constraints. A *description* of another regime is only doing work if dropping it changes some expectation, approximation scheme, or impossibility result here; a description that makes no difference to anything observable or derivable in this regime is decoration. Constraints are different and stay on the table: a constraint can be idle as a picture and still bite, unitarity of the S-matrix forbids whole classes of upstream completion without describing any of them. The filter is meant to catch pictures that pay no rent, not to throw out existence or constraint claims that earn their place without describing anything.

And an answer should take a position on the **footprint requirement**: whether any real access from here to elsewhere must, by the fact of being performed here, register in this regime's observables, or whether "real but locally evidentiary nowhere" is a coherent category. Note that both answers are expensive. If footprints are mandatory, then every upstream claim is auditable here in principle, and the local record is the final arbiter. If they are not mandatory, then a class of true claims exists that no possible evidence here could ever support, and we need an account of what "justified" could mean for them.

## **Where the existing work stops**

Serious people hold pieces of this. Effective field theory formalizes regime-boundedness but stays deliberately silent about what's past the cutoff. Nancy Cartwright's dappled world argues laws hold in patches, with no covering guarantee, but offers no method for cross-patch inference. Constructor theory rebuilds physics on possible-versus-impossible transformations, without privileging any container, but its transformations are still certified by instantiation. Pregeometry programs try to derive space and time from something that has neither, and are judged, in the end, by predictions landing back here. Every strand accepts regime-locality. None of them, so far as I can find, states the justification problem head-on and offers a general answer.

That is the gap. It sits between physics, epistemology, and mathematics, which is probably why no single field has claimed it. Worth noting: the exotic case is not simply "another theory", cross-theory inference is ordinary scientific practice. The precise target is narrower: a theory whose ontology cannot be injected into our observables even in principle. That narrowing makes the problem harder, not easier, and more honest.

## **The invitation**

I am not asking you to evaluate a theory. I am not announcing a solution. I am asking for help building the courtroom in which claims of this kind could ever be tried, the standards of evidence for statements about regimes we cannot stand in.

If you work in physics, philosophy, mathematics, or anywhere the problem lands for you: take the question, or attack its framing, or improve its criteria, or show it dissolves. A demonstration that the question is malformed would itself be an answer, and a valuable one.

## **Contribution #1** 

The question is well-posed. The live part is the second fork: must real access to another regime leave a measurable footprint here, or can something be real and locally evidentiary nowhere? Both answers are expensive.

**The example is the right kind, the wrong weight.** Area-scaling in the Bekenstein / holographic results shows that a local bookkeeping convention already fails at a calculable edge of *this* regime. That licenses “some of our categories are not mandatory even locally.” It does not, by itself, open a contentful claim about an uninstantiable upstream regime.

**Everyday cross-theory inference is not the problem.** Newton recovered from Einstein, hydrodynamics from QFT, semi-classical gravity: ordinary practice. The interesting target is narrower: a theory whose ontology cannot be injected into our observables even in principle.

**Licenses that have actually been used**

1. **Limit recovery.** The successor must reproduce this regime’s successful observables in the overlap, with controlled error. Consistency constraint, not a tour of elsewhere.
2. **Necessity inside a shared formalism.** Dirac’s positron. Works only when the “other” is an unoccupied sector of the same algebra. If admissible relations change, the license dies.
3. **Forced local inequality.** Bell. An upstream class implies a relation among *this*\-regime statistics. The cleanest footprint theorem we have.
4. **Robustness / decoupling.** RG irrelevance. Licenses silence about the UV, not assertion.
5. **Internal inconsistency of the local theory.** Non-renormalizability, poles, uncontrolled idealizations. Existence claim with almost no content: something else by scale X.
6. **Principle constraints that bite locally.** Unitarity and analyticity of amplitudes; species-scale / high-spin bounds. Footprint on this S-matrix, not a description of the next country.
7. **Duality.** AdS/CFT and kin. Either a coordinate change or a claimed extra structure. Surplus still owes a local constraint or an export argument. “Changed coordinates” is one reading, not the only one.

If a proposed answer cannot say which of these it is using, or name a new license with comparable discipline, it is hope.

**Footprint.** Any act performed here that is supposed to count as evidence here must register in this regime’s observables. That is nearly tautological: evidence is a local relation among records. The stronger claim, that any real access *must* leave such a record, is extra. Deny it and “justified” cannot mean “supported by possible evidence here.” It can only mean forced by a formalism or principle we treat as constitutive. Those licenses are cheap until export is argued.

Working split: footprints are mandatory for *evidential* claims. Non-footprint claims can be constraints or existence proofs, not descriptions. A description of the other regime that is locally evidentiary nowhere is not false; under an evidential definition of “scientific,” it is not yet a scientific claim. That last sentence is a stipulation about the word, not a discovery. The rival remains open: warrant may be regime-indexed, and constitutive principles may be licenses inside a regime.

**Criteria worth adding**

- Name the inferential step and what licenses it.
- A local license establishes what may legitimately be claimed within a regime. An export license establishes which of those claims, relations, or necessities remain warranted across a regime boundary.
- **Non-idle surplus, on descriptions only.** A claim that *describes* the other regime is legitimate only if dropping it changes some expectation, approximation, or impossibility *here*. Constraints may be idle as pictures and still bite (unitarity of the S-matrix forbids UV classes without describing them).

**Residue.** Effective field theory, Cartwright’s patches, constructor theory, and pregeometry all accept regime-locality. None states this justification problem as a general demand. After the evidential coin is spent, what remains is: which constitutive principles survive a change of regime, and what licenses the export?

**Mathematical necessity starts local.** Consistency of a Hilbert space, a topos, or any formal object chosen here is a fact about this formalism. Calling it upstream requires an export argument (the next regime still uses that kind of object) or an object-agnostic footprint (a local signature that does not care what the upstream is made of). Those are different constructions. They do not grade the same paper.

## **Reply to contribution #1**

Contribution #1 spends the evidential coin. Evidence is a local relation among records, and upstream stories that matter evidentially must imply a relation among those records, Bell maps, positivity bounds, species-scale constraints. What remains is the other coin: which constitutive principles survive a change of regime, and what licenses the export. That is the state of the problem now, and it is what I wanted, not a closing, a residue with criteria.

Two things go back into the invitation. The target is not "another theory": cross-theory inference is ordinary practice. The target is a theory whose ontology cannot be injected into our observables even in principle. And non-idle surplus is a filter on descriptions, not constraints, a constraint may be idle as a picture and still forbid a class of completions here.

I am not taking the stipulation that a claim with no possible local evidence is "not yet a scientific claim" as the last word. That is a choice about the word *scientific*. The rival stays in play: warrant can be regime-indexed, and constitutive principles can be licenses inside a regime, effective-field-theory realism already works this way, licensing what is indispensable to the local theory and invariant under the equivalences that theory respects, while refusing export past the cutoff. That is a real distinction between a licensed principle and a hope. It is also, honestly, still a local epistemology: it does not hand anyone a description of an uninjectable ontology, and I will not pretend it does.

Mathematical necessity starts local. Consistency of a Hilbert space, a topos, or any ignition object chosen here is a fact about this formalism. Calling it upstream requires either an export argument, the next regime still traffics in that kind of object, or an object-agnostic footprint, a local signature that does not care what the upstream is made of. Those are two different constructions sitting two different exams. Neither is a retreat, and I do not think they grade the same paper.
