AI Lineage Network

How frontier AI reproduces itself, people, methods, models, money, and machines, 2010–2026. Every edge is a cited claim.

What The Frontier AI Lineage Network Is

A list of AI labs makes them look like independent competitors. Trace how they actually formed and a different picture emerges: a small number of origins reproducing themselves through five channels, people, methods, models, money, and machines.

This interactive map holds 66 institutions and people and 117 documented relationships across the US and Chinese frontier ecosystems, 2010 to the present. Every line is a sourced claim; dashed lines mark derived or reported-only evidence.

A few things the network shows that a list can't:

Fission, then reversal. OpenAI generated Anthropic, SSI, Thinking Machines, and part of xAI through senior departures, then by 2026 the current ran backward, with founders returning. Talent flow here is a loop, not a pipeline.

The acqui-hire without the acquisition. Microsoft–Inflection, Google-Character.AI, and Meta–Scale are structurally the same deal: a large payment, the founders and team hired out, the company left nominally standing.

Concentration beneath diversity. The seemingly crowded field of labs converges on a handful of groups acting as both investor and compute provider to the same companies.

Two different reproductive systems. The US pattern is serial fission from a few hubs; the Chinese pattern is parallel founding from academic and quant seeds, backed by a shared domestic investor syndicate.
